Harry Dresden is the best and technically the ‘only’ at what he does. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal capabilities, they come to him for answers. For the ‘everyday’ world is actually full of strange and magical things - and most of them don’t play well with humans. That’s where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a - well, whatever.

[My Thoughts & Favorite Quotes]

“Have you ever felt despair? Absolute hopelessness? Have you ever stood in the darkness and known, deep in your heart, in your spirit, that it was never, ever going to get better? That something had been lost, forever, and that it wasn't coming back?”

✳ I have mixed feelings about this book.
✳ I like it. I don't like it.
✳ I like Harry. I don't like Harry.

✳ I enjoyed the storyline. It was an easy and entertaining read. It was sometimes predictable but not enough to make me dislike it.

✳ I read a lot of reviews saying it was a little slow at the beginning, but I disagree. I think the plot moved fast and with the addition of a generous dose of humor.

"Kids. You gotta love them. I adore children. A little salt, a squeeze of lemon--perfect.”

✳ Murphy - the tough detective - is Harry's friend. Or not. She helped him when he was hit on the head and he saved her from the scorpion. OK! But... They don't trust each other at all! So far I don't like her. She's probably going to be in the next books so I hope she gets better.
✳ Bob - spirit living in a skull - is awesome! The love potion scene was the best. Hilarious!

"Harry," Bob lectured me, "I was seducing shepherdesses when you weren't a twinkle in your great-grandcestor's eyes. I think I know what I'm doing."

By the way, I really liked that Harry is a wizard who uses potions.

✳ Morgan - the honest wizard - is an interesting character with potential to good stories in the future.
✳ Bianca - the seductive vampiress - cried because Harry could see how she's truly ugly. Really!? What kind of powerful vampire is she?!
✳ Susan - the journalist... whatever. I don't care about her.

✳ I didn't quite understand how the magic works. Maybe it's just me or it will be better explained in the next books.
✳ Harry... is he a good wizard or not? Sometimes he completely dominated his powers and sometimes he was really insecure. I didn't get it.

"Wizardry is all about thinking ahead, about being prepared. Wizards aren't really superhuman. We just have a leg up on seeing things more clearly than other people, and being able to use the extra information we have for our benefit. Hell, the word wizard comes from the same root as wise. We know things. We aren't any stronger or faster than anyone else. We don't even have all that much more going in the mental department. But we're god-awful sneaky, and if we get the chance to get set for something, we can do some impressive things."

✳ Besides, I'm not sure how I feel about Harry's actions toward women. It bothered me the "women are better at hating" thing.

I will read the other books ... someday.

Well... It was nice to meet you, Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden ;)
